Caring for your Wool Comforter
If you currently own or have purchased a wool comforter, you know how amazingly comfortable and breathable wool is.
Interestingly, wool can not be cared for the same as other materials, as it does not yield itself to washing very well. Agitation and warmth causes wool to felt, (Which is really cool characteristic when you’re working on a felted craft, but you don’t want that to happen to your blanket!)
Because of wool’s amazing natural properties, it does stay remarkably clean odour free on it’s own. Wool literally repels dust, odour, and mold. It’s really an unbelievable quality - synthetic fibres have nothing over wool!
However - when your duvet does need to be refreshed, it can be exposed to sun and fresh air. Hang outside on a line and the wool naturally deodorizes and freshens itself. We usually do this twice a year - in the spring and fall.
It is also important to protect your comforter with a cover, one that can be removed and washed.
Accidents do happen, and if you need to, you may spot clean the duvet with some biodegradable soap or vinegar. Then hang it several days in fresh air to dry. Smell it after a day or two and you will be surprised that it is odour free. We have rarely, if ever, had an accident that has not been totally taken care of like this.
Washing the entire comforter can be done in an emergency, but it needs to be done extremely carefully with absolutely no agitation at all. We do not usually recommend this, but if you are very careful, you can wash the entire blanket in some cool water and mild soap, and hang to dry. Contact for more detailed instructions.
